About Us
The Bar Association Ghaziabad (BAG) is one of the most prominent and politically active legal bodies in the National Capital Region (NCR). Its history is closely tied to the administrative evolution of Ghaziabad from a small munsifi to a major industrial and judicial hub.1. Origins and District Status : For much of the British Raj and the early years of independence, Ghaziabad was a subdivision of the Meerut district. The local legal community operated under the umbrella of the Meerut Bar.
The turning point for the Bar Association came on November 14, 1944, when Ghaziabad was officially declared a separate district by then-Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari. This led to the formal establishment of a dedicated district-level Bar Association to represent the advocates practicing at the newly formed District and Sessions Court.
2. Growth and Legal Influence : The Bar Association has grown from a handful of practitioners to a massive body of several thousand members.
Infrastructure : The Bar is headquartered within the District Court complex (near Raj Nagar). Over the years, it has advocated for better chambers, library facilities, and digital infrastructure for its members.
Taxation Bar : Ghaziabad also hosts a specialized Ghaziabad Taxation Bar, which recently celebrated its Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 2024–2025, highlighting the city's growth as an industrial and commercial center.
3. Key Milestones and Contemporary Issues : Political Role | The Bar is known for its high-stakes annual elections, which are often viewed as a litmus test for local political sentiment. The positions of President and Secretary are highly contested.
Advocacy and Strikes : The Association has historically been at the forefront of the demand for a High Court Bench in Western Uttar Pradesh, frequently participating in strikes and "Satyagrahas" alongside the Meerut Bar to reduce the distance litigants must travel to Allahabad.
Recent Developments (2024–2025): The Bar has recently faced internal structural changes. In late 2024, internal disputes led a faction of lawyers to propose the formation of a "New District Bar Association," though the original Bar Association Ghaziabad remains the primary recognized body.
